Green gains: Pledge offers emissions calculator to BIFA members

London-based software developer Pledge is working with the British International Freight Association to help members calculate emissions with its new online tool for shippers. The carbon emissions measurement and offsetting platform for freight forwarders allows association members access to Pledge’s freight emissions calculator on the British International Freight Association (BIFA) website, according to a release from Pledge. [caption id="attachment_57138031" align="alignright" width="394"] Pledge’s Freight Emissions Calculator on the BIFA Website (Photo/Meantime Communications)[/caption] BIFA members have free access to the calculator for 14 days to see if the technology benefits their operations, the release stated. After the two-week trial, members must pay to use the service. Forwarders can enter a shipment’s measurement and weight along with its origin and destination, into the calculator to see the shipment’s projected emissions and compare them to emissions regulations, the release stated. “Our members face pressure from various bodies, and increasingly their own customers, to demonstrate how they are able to calculate the freight emissions associated with a shipment,” Steve Parker , BIFA’S director general, said in the release. “This is an important tool for BIFA members to help their clients meet their reporting obligations.” The calculator offers a feature, Clarity, that “breaks down the methodology used to calculate carbon emissions, while also highlighting any assumptions that were made, to provide end-to-end transparency throughout the supply chain,” according to the release. “We’re not just calculating emissions: We’re helping catalyze a new era of sustainability in transport and logistics,” David de Picciotto , co-founder and chief executive of Pledge, said in the release. Dnata switches to biofuel in UAE Dnata’s group brands, including dnata Logistics , Arabian Adventures , Alpha Flight Services and City Sightseeing , have transitioned their vehicles to run on a biofuel blend. The move is expected to cut 80 tonnes of carbon emissions annually in the United Arab Emirates, according to a release from the company. “We constantly explore and implement emission reduction methods across our fleet and infrastructure to reduce our carbon footprint,” Steve Allen , dnata’s chief executive, said in the release. “The introduction of biofuel to a diverse range of our UAE businesses is an important step in our ongoing journey. It offers a simple and effective method of cutting emissions throughout the fuel life cycle, without requiring any changes to equipment.” The initiative stems from dnata’s pledge to reduce its carbon footprint and waste-to-landfill targets by 20% by 2024, the release stated. “We will continue to invest in our operations, including large-scale infrastructure solutions, to further enhance our sustainability performance and achieve our green operations targets,” Allen said. ANA bolsters SAF initiatives to cargo brands Japan-based airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) is expanding its sustainable aviation fuel initiatives to include companies that use its cargo services through ANA Cargo . The carrier launched a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiative in October 2021 to spread sustainability awareness and understanding to forwarders and logistics firms that work with the airline, according to a release from the company. The goal is to create an entirely sustainable value chain, the release stated. “Our SAF flight initiative is a critical component of ANA’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions in our operations and be a catalyst for other businesses looking to become more sustainable,” Toshiaki Toyama , chair of ANA Cargo, said in the release. “Global warming has become a business continuity risk far beyond our imagination.
