ZeroAvia obtains hydrogen engine design organization approval

ZeroAvia has become the first hydrogen-electric power plant developer to obtain design organization approval. The design organization approval (DOA) from the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) sends a clear signal about the capabilities and procedures ZeroAvia has established to remain compliant with U.K. commercial air regulations, the company told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/ZeroAvia)[/caption] The DOA is for ZeroAvia’s ZA600, a 600kW powertrain designed to power Part 23 aircraft, according to a Nov. 17 release from the company. The approval follows the FAA permitting the hydrogen engine manufacturer to establish its own compliance guidelines for its powertrain in August. ZeroAvia in April set in motion the pathway to certification for its hydrogen-electric engine in the United States and opened its propulsion facility at Paine Field (PAE) in Everett, Wash. Ramping up production capabilities at its U.S. facility will support the approval process and pre-certification delivery to customers, the company told Cargo Facts . ZeroAvia also recently completed its full engine test facility in the third quarter, enabling the company to share test data with the FAA and CAA throughout the approval process. Funding hydrogen power ZeroAvia has secured nearly 3,000 full engine and component pre-orders with airlines and OEMs, which are expected to generate more than $10 billion in revenue. To keep pace, the company unveiled plans in May to open a second production site at the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District in Scotland near Glasgow Airport (GLA). To support the development of the new site, ZeroAvia received $11.75 million in grants from Scottish Enterprise as well as $26 million from the Scottish National Investment Bank and about $42 million from the U.K. National Wealth Fund as part of the company’s Series C funding round led by Airbus, Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital and NEOM Investment Fund. Additionally, ZeroAvia has received $24 million from the U.K. government and more than $250 million in private investment for research and development, the release said. ASL Aviation Holdings , American Airlines and Textron Aviation are among the customers that have placed orders for ZA600 powertrains and hydrogen-electric engines with ZeroAvia. Powering airships ZeroAvia may soon add its first airship customer for its ZA600 powertrain after announcing on Nov.10 that it signed a memorandum of understanding with U.K.-based Hybrid Air Vehicles to develop a hybrid-electric variant of its Airlander 10 prototype. The Airlander 10 is equipped with four diesel engines and can carry 10 tonnes across 4,000 nautical miles. ZeroAvia will evaluate integrating the ZA600 into the Airlander 10 propulsion system and eventually research the feasibility of replacing the diesel engines with hydrogen-electric propulsion, the developer said.
