Airfreight stakeholders celebrate Earth Day

The industry-wide goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 2050 remains constant as carriers, forwarders and other cargo players continue investing in innovative solutions to combat the climate crisis and promote greener skies amid a tumultuous market, rising airfreight rates and capacity constraints. From sustainable partnerships, alternative fuel projects and published sustainability reports, here are some of the ways the air cargo industry is pursuing green initiatives: AIT Worldwide Logistics releases inaugural 2021 sustainability report Illinois-based freight forwarder AIT Worldwide Logistics, which has committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2035, today published its inaugural sustainability report. To achieve its goals, the forwarder has developed a carbon accounting and management program, including an emissions tracker in partnership with climate action service company ClimatePartner, according to the report. AIT is also continuing to invest in other energy-efficient technology, such as cloud computing and cooling systems. Looking forward, AIT will be focusing specifically on greenhouse gas emissions and energy management, labor practices and employee health and safety, according to the report. Dnata invests in solar energy at SIN Ground services provider dnata continues to invest in more sustainable infrastructure and recently installed 3.5 megawatt-peak rooftop solar power across its cargo facilities at Singapore’s Changi Airport (SIN), generating more than 4,300 hours of green power annually, according to an April 21 release. The new power system, which consists of 6,500 solar panels, will reduce dnata’s electricity-related carbon footprint by 20% over the next two years. Dnata aims to reduce its global carbon footprint by 20% by 2024. In addition to the new solar power system, the company is reducing food waste across its catering operations, replacing its ground support equipment and forklifts with hybrid and electric vehicles, and more. Dronamics awarded carbon-neutral certification Cargo drone developer and operator Dronamics on Wednesday was awarded a CarbonNeutral certification in accordance with the CarbonNeutral Protocol standard. The company’s Black Swan drone runs at 80% to 100% lower emissions than other transportation modes, with an engine that operates on both biofuels and synthetic fuels. The CarbonNeutral certification, which was created by sustainability solutions provider Natural Capital Partners, measures operations such as energy use, business travel and waste disposal across Scope 1, 2 and Scope 3 emission sources. Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from a company, while Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from sources like electricity and heat. All remaining emissions fall under Scope 3. Menzies cuts carbon with new partnership Ground-handling provider Menzies Aviation is partnering with social impact company ClimateCare to support its Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments in order to reach carbon neutrality by 2033, according to an April 21 statement. Menzies will be supporting three different projects: Providing clean cookstoves in Bangladesh, afforestation initiatives in Mexico, and rainforest protection measures in Indonesia. Through the ClimateCare projects, Menzies has compensated for 43,000 tonnes of 2021 Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, or 48% of its total carbon emissions, according to a release. The project is the first major program of its kind in Asia and will source its biofuel from suppliers PetroChina and Shell. Rhenus Logistics, DB Schenker and Bollore Logistics will discuss SAF and sustainability in air cargo logistics on Tuesday, June 7 at the Air Cargo Tech Summit, the new airfreight logistics event presented by Air Cargo World .
