Royal Mail, Windracers seek to create 50 new postal drone routes by 2025

Royal Mail Group and logistics drone company Windracers have partnered to create 50 more postal drone routes over the next three years to improve the reliability of mail services to remote islands in the U.K. [caption id="attachment_99458" align="alignright" width="500"] Photo courtesy of Royal Mail[/caption] Subject to Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approval, Royal Mail intends to deploy up to 200 drones to support the new routes over the next three years, with plans to deploy a fleet of more than 500 across the U.K. in the long term, according to a Thursday release. Initial drone postal routes would include Isles of Scilly, Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands and the Hebrides. See also : Flying forward: Integrating cargo drones beyond healthcare Royal Mail and Windracers have conducted four drone trials over the past 18 months, with the latest held in April on the Shetland Islands, according to the release. During the test flight, mail was delivered between Tingwall Airport (LWK) and Unst, about 50 miles away. Other flight trials include the Isle of Mull in Scotland, the Isles of Scilly and between Kirkwall and North Ronaldsay on the Orkney Islands, according to the release. London-based Windracers offers air mail, parcel, medical and aid cargo drone delivery, according to the company’s website. Windracers’ Unmanned Low-cost TRAnsport (ULTRA) platform was developed in collaboration with a team at Southamptom University to move up to 100kg of mail up to 1,000 km.
