Jedsy expands medical drone delivery agreements

Switzerland-based Jedsy is expanding its medical delivery footprint after launching a pilot project with the Dr. Risch laboratory group and signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Malawi’s Ministry of Health this month. The partnership with Dr. Risch Group runs for two years and will pilot the integration of drone delivery with hospitals and laboratories in Switzerland, Jedsy told Air Cargo World . (Photo/Jedsy)[/caption] Jedsy’s commercially certified drone can deliver packages of up to 2.3 kg at speeds of 80 knots over 120 km ranges, the company said. The drone, which Jedsy refers to as a “glider,” operates with a “mailbox” that attaches to buildings’ window sills. At the end of each flight, the glider orients itself from level flight to an almost vertical attitude to dock with a small mailbox at destination facilities, where the Jedsy will charge and redeploy from for its next flight. Under the agreement with Dr. Risch, Jedsy will be paid per mile flown. The drones will operate under European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) rules, which allow for operations over sparsely populated areas far from airports, Jedsy told Air Cargo World . Jedsy’s glider is powered by six electric motors and equipped with both LiDAR ground altimeters, redundant GPS systems, ADS-B, transponder systems and other mitigation procedures to avoid air traffic but is currently only operating in less-restricted class G airspace away from airports, the company said. The drone manufacturer said that recently passed legislation that will create the new U airspace classification will soon allow operations within the vicinity of airports. SORA rules have also been used for operations by fellow Switzerland-based medical drone delivery company Rigi Technologies . Meanwhile, as part of the Malawi MOU announced this week, Jedsy will operate its drones — like the Swoop Aero drone, which recently received orders from Kenya-based Astral Aerial Solutions — to deliver medical supplies between hospitals in the country. Medical drone delivery has fueled other advancements in drone technology, such as Drone Delivery Canada earning a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada and Matternet M2 becoming the first type-certified drone in the U.S.
