Kuehne+Nagel introduces semiconductor quality standard

Kuehne+Nagel has upgraded its semiconductor shipment services with the SemiconChain solution, a quality standard for the freight forwarder’s 25 global network stations that handle the chips. SemiconChain’s standards aim to provide users with improved visibility and security, reduced risks and automated processes, according to a Dec. 14 release. SemiconChain network stations offer time-defined services, security-focused shipment planning, temperature controls and complete tracking visibility. The stations are also staffed with continuously trained industry experts who ensure the chips are handled safely, the release stated. Kuehne+Nagel has handled semiconductor shipments for years, providing transport and contract logistics services to the industry, Barry O`Dowd, senior vice president and global head of high tech, told Air Cargo World . [caption id="attachment_94116" align="alignright" width="366"] © Can Stock Photo / andyb1126[/caption] “We recognized the need for reliability, predictability and security for the semiconductor supply chain, together with an increasing importance of having structured quality management processes to our semicon industry customers,” O’Dowd said. The standards also include integration with quality management systems ISO 9001-2015 and IATF 16949, used by the automotive industry, where semiconductors are in especially high demand, in addition to the computation and data storage and wireless sectors, according to the release. As one of the most valuable commodities for shippers, the main challenge for the semiconductor industry is reliability, O’Dowd said. “This applies whether we are dealing with semiconductor capital equipment — which can require very sensitive handling, sometimes with temperature or humidity control, and often needs to fly on specific freighter aircraft types — as well as finished goods, which may need to be handled with special security handling processes,” he said. A volatile supply chain Semiconductors, while high value, can be subject to shifts in supply and demand due to geopolitical factors. Most recently, forwarders were slightly affected by slowing demand and rising costs for the chips, as well as restrictions on U.S. exports of semiconductors to China issued in October by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). Kuehne+Nagel did not expect any adjustments in volumes of semiconductor equipment to affect its operations, the company said. “In case of disruptions and unstable supply chains, many key industries can be severely affected,” O’Dowd said in the release. “Our new service will help customers navigate the semiconductor market’s volatility and nuances, ensuring an uninterrupted supply chain.” The initial feedback from validation sessions with leading semiconductor industry stakeholders was “very positive,” he added.
