ANA completes retirement of 3 oldest 767 freighters

ANA consolidated its cargo operations at Narita Airport into a new building and retired its third 767-300BCF. ANA Cargo, the cargo arm of Japan-based ANA, sent the 1992-vintage, CF6-powered unit 25654 to Victorville, Calif. (VCV), on Nov. 13 after ending service with it at the end of October. This was the third of three 767-300 freighters the carrier had planned to remove this year . (Courtesy/ANA Cargo)[/caption] The two other aircraft — the 1992-vintage unit 25616 and 1994-vintage unit 27339 — arrived at VCV in July and in San Bernardino, Calif. (SBD), in August, respectively. Units 25654, 25616 and 27339 were the oldest freighters ANA Cargo operated. The carrier now has two Boeing-converted 767-300BCFs, four factory 767-300Fs and two 777Fs. The carrier removed three 767-300BCFs from its fleet in 2019, selling them to CAM . ANA also has two 777-8Fs on order for delivery in 2028. Improved efficiency at NRT To support its cargo operations at Narita (NRT), ANA Cargo recently moved into Cargo Building No. 8, built by the Narita International Airport Corp. (NAA) and leased by ANA. Opened in October, the building has an area of about 61,000 square meters with 38,000 square meters of warehouse space, and is ANA’s largest cargo warehouse , according to the carrier. ANA handles about 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually at the airport, ANA told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/ANA)[/caption] Prior to the facility’s opening, ANA used six cargo warehouses located across the airport. Now, ANA’s cargo operations are confined to Buildings No. 7 and No. 8, which are adjacent. By consolidating, ANA has reduced connection time to about 180 minutes, a maximum 40% reduction, ANA told Cargo Facts . A new cargo gate enhances access between the facility and cargo terminal area. The cargo gate, which has three entry lanes and one exit lane, is the largest at NRT’s cargo terminal, according to ANA. (Courtesy/ANA)[/caption] Cargo Building No. 8 achieved certification from the Japan Ministry of the Environment, ensuring the building was constructed in accordance with net-zero efforts and energy-efficiency considerations. The facility uses high-efficiency air conditioning equipment and was constructed with building materials containing high thermal insulation. NAA also installed a photovoltaic power generation system for the facility. Technology The warehouse features automated guided vehicles (AGV) that automate cargo transfer and storage operations in the export area. The AGVs use light detection and ranging, known as LiDAR, to prevent collisions, ANA told Cargo Facts . Five automated forklifts have also been introduced in the import area. These vehicles do not preclude human labor. People are needed for operations requiring high expertise, such as handling special cargo like semiconductors and large animals, ANA told Cargo Facts . Also, people are needed to load the cargo onto and off of the AGVs. (Courtesy/ANA)[/caption] Additionally, ANA implemented automated unit load device racks to improve operational quality and reduce labor needs. Specialty cargo ANA obtained IATA CEIV Pharma certification in 2017 and CEIV Fresh certification in 2023. With this facility, ANA plans to expand its animal and valuables storage capabilities, according to the carrier. The dedicated pharmaceutical storage area in Building No. 8 is equipped with an antechamber between the storage and cargo entry/exit points, allowing for strict temperature control, ANA told Cargo Facts . In the sub-zero temperature pharmaceutical storage, ANA can handle cargo containing dry ice. Three temperature zones are available for frozen, refrigerated and ambient-temperature goods. The zones can be set to: -20 C; -5 C; 5 C; or 25 C. All rooms are equipped with temperature-monitoring functions based on temperature mapping. The 5 C room features an import truck port, allowing loading onto trucks while maintaining temperature control. For live animal cargo , temperature control is provided through air conditioning and external influences, such as light and noise, are minimized to reduce stress on animals.
