US airports brace for Winter Storm Elliott

Winter Storm Elliott is blowing across the U.S., causing flight cancellations and disruptions to airline activities, but cargo hubs say they’re prepared and doing what they can to keep things moving. More than 1,200 flights have been canceled this week due to Elliott, and American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have provided passengers flying Dec. 20 through today with travel waivers to reschedule their flights in light of the hazardous weather conditions. Photographer: David Ryder/Bloomberg[/caption] The Midwest has been hit with sub-zero-degree temperatures and heavy snowfall and winds, particularly across Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and parts of New York and Pennsylvania, according to the National Weather Service . Indianapolis Airport (IND) completed all their regular checks and trainings to prepare for a hard winter and was operating as usual today but is taking it hour-by-hour looking at the weekend, an airport spokesperson told Air Cargo World, Chicago O’Hare (ORD) had 235 cancellations and 247 flight delays as of 10:50 a.m. local time today. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) saw 8.1 inches of snow Wednesday but had “continuous operations” on the airfield with “minimal cancellations and delays for airlines,” a spokesperson from MSP told Air Cargo World . Flight radar indicated 38 flight cancellations and 196 delays today. Business as usual In the South, subfreezing temperatures affected Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia, putting them under the National Weather Service’s hard freeze warning. Atlanta did not have precipitation in the forecast as of Dec. 21; subsequently, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) anticipated business as usual, an airport spokesperson told Air Cargo World . Dallas Fort Worth Airport (DFW) is monitoring the weather forecast and “has made the necessary precautions for the potential of subfreezing temperatures,” according to an airport statement today. On the West Coast, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Portland (PDX) and Denver (DEN) were under winter storm warnings as well. DEN “knows snow,” an airport spokesperson told Air Cargo World, and had all of its runways and roads cleared as of 9:30 a.m. local time today. The airport has 233 cancellations and 119 delays for Dec. 23, according to flight tracking data. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) tweeted today that de-icing efforts in Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Denver were causing delays.
