Symetrica, a company that specializes in radiation detection and identification, has created a handheld radiation detector that is being used by many European customs authorities and may soon be introduced to other aviation markets.
Called the VeriFinder, the unit is designed to scan inaccessible areas, “which is an essential new capability within an integrated detection framework,” said Geraint Dermody, Symetrica’s director of business development. The device’s radio-isotope identifier supports enhanced “in the field” decision-making by ensuring mobile detection of radioactive threats with the minimum of false positives or negatives.
The VeriFinder is aimed at police and security professionals, but it also can be deployed by customs authorities, ground handlers or anyone else involved in potentially dangerous cargo.
