HKIA reverses recent declines in cargo

Despite being the world’s busiest cargo airport for the last five years, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) halted a recent skid by posting a 1 percent year-over-year gain in cargo volume in September, reaching 368,000 tonnes for the month.

The relatively modest y-o-y increase came mostly from a 3 percent surge in September exports, y-o-y, while monthly imports remained flat and trans-shipments fell by 3 percent, compared to September 2014. The regions that experienced the greatest increase in HKIA exports were North America and the Australasian region.

For the first nine months of 2015, HKIA handled 3.2 million tonnes of cargo, representing a slight, 0.2 percent rise over the same period last year. Viewing the figures on a 12-month basis, which includes the rise in cargo from the U.S. West Coast port crisis, cargo volume at HKIA grew by 1.3 percent, year-over-year, at 4.4 million tonnes.
