CargoLogic Germany to double fleet by yearend

Leipzig-based CargoLogic Germany (CLG) intends to double its fleet this year and will have six 737 freighters by the end of 2021. The carrier, which currently leases three 737-400SFs from Vx Capital and provides ACMI capacity to integrators, told Cargo Facts that it expects to take delivery of its next 737-400SF in “a couple of weeks,” while the fifth and sixth are likely to arrive this summer, around July. (Photo/CargoLogic Germany)[/caption] CLG said the three aircraft will also be from Vx Capital, and that the first of these units will join fresh from conversion by Aeronautical Engineers Inc. (AEI). The two subsequent aircraft have already flown as freighters, and are among the forty-three 737-400Fs in Vx’s portfolio. Vx currently only has two 737-400s that have recently completed conversion and are still at the KF Aerospace facility in Kelowna (YLW): units 28752 and 28753 that, along with a third frame (27914), were part of a conversion order Vx and AEI announced in January 2020 , involving three ex-LOT aircraft. The lessor confirmed to Cargo Facts that it will deliver unit 28752 to CLG on lease in April. CLG told Cargo Facts that it was in discussions on the fifth and sixth 737s, and said it is possible that one or both could be transferred from Russia-based Atran, a fellow affiliate of Volga-Dnepr Group. “The growth is more or less what we had planned as a business case before we started at all,” said Dierk Naether, CEO of CLG. “There may be a little shift in the aircraft numbers and timings and so on, but it’s a matter of availability of opportunities.” CLG, which obtained its German air operator certificate in the second half of 2019 , had already received its first two units (27673, ex-NewGen Airways, and 28867, ex-Air Explore) earlier that year, with the third aircraft (25775, ex-Yamal Airlines) joining from Atran around the end of 2019 . It remains to be seen whether the expected addition of more 737-800Fs this year will release any of Atran’s three -400SFs. CLG, which runs an express and e-commerce operation with a combination of overnight and daytime flights, saw a significant increase in utilization toward the end of last year and has continued to see quite high numbers in February and March, according to Deputy CEO Andrey Andreev. CLG said that it makes sense to keep to a single freighter type for now, while it remains a relatively lean carrier, but it may consider “the next step” before the end of 2021. It had previously planned to have a fleet of ten freighters by 2022. “For the time being, I would say we are still young and in a developing phase, so it’s good to stick to that,” CLG’s Naether said. “But what will come in the next year or next few years, it’s too early to say.” Cargo Facts Asia, taking place April 20-21 as a virtual experience, is the event for exploring opportunity in the Asia-Pacific region.
