Air Atlanta Icelandic sets roots in Malta

Air Atlanta Icelandic has established a new airline in Malta and is targeting the trans-Atlantic market for charter and ACMI services. Transport Malta, the country’s Civil Aviation Directorate, issued Air Atlanta Europe an operator’s certificate on Sept. 30 and on Oct. 6, the newly formed carrier requested permission to launch flights to the United States. (Photo/Network Aviation Group)[/caption] Air Atlanta Europe submitted a request for a foreign air carrier permit to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to “transport persons, property and mail between any point or points in the European Union and the United States,” according to the filing. In the filing, the carrier also requested a temporary exemption for up to two years to enable it to operate in the interim, until a permit is issued. Air Atlanta Europe becomes the third European ACMI and charter freighter operator to establish a Malta-based affiliate carrier, following similar moves from Latvia-based SmartLynx and U.K.-based Titan Airways . “Malta has an active aviation sector and is, from a regulatory and commercial standpoint, an ideal location to run a charter airline from,” Air Atlanta Europe told our sister publication Cargo Facts. Air Atlanta Europe confirmed that it will eventually add freighters to its AOC, but did not specify when or if they will be transferred from the Icelandic certificate . The Maltese airline is launching with one passenger 747-400 (32871), transferred from affiliate carrier, Air Atlanta Icelandic. Previously, unit 32871 has been utilized in cargo-only configuration. For now, the Iceland-based carrier’s active freighter fleet comprises three 747-400Fs, five 747-400BDSFs and a 747-400BCF.
