Condor shifts from leisure to cargo with reconfigured 767s

(Photo: Condor)[/caption] Germany-based leisure airline Condor has begun operating “converted” versions of its 767-300ERs with seats removed from the passenger cabin, joining a growing list of airlines that are maximizing cargo volume during the COVID-19 crisis. Condor confirmed to Cargo Facts it has already converted four of its 767-300ERs, and plans to modify ten more aircraft. All will be completed in the next two weeks, with the exception of one frame which will be reconfigured after its C-check in three weeks. Condor operated its first cargo flight with a 767-300ER in early April. Initially flying between Frankfurt (FRA) and Shanghai (PVG), the operation has now expanded to include Dusseldorf (DUS) and Hanover (HAJ) in Germany, and Beijing (PEK), Shenzhen (SZX) and Xi’an (XIY) in China. Almost all the flights are routed through Almaty (ALA) in Kazakhstan. All sixteen of Condor’s 767-300ERs are currently being deployed as makeshift freighters on cargo-only flights, according to Cargo Facts ’ passenger freighter database . The airline’s fleet also includes A320s, A321s and 757-300s. Fellow German airline Lufthansa has already converted four A330-300s into cargo-only configuration, and the airline group’s MRO arm, Lufthansa Technik, is developing similar modifications for other airlines . Other carriers that have temporarily removed seats from passenger cabins to create space for cargo include: Air Canada with A330-300s, Dash 8-400s and 777-300ERs ; Air China with 777-300ERs; Austrian Airlines with two 777-200ERs; China Eastern with A330s; El Al with 777-200ERs; Icelandair with all three of its 767-300ERs; and LATAM , which today announced it had reconfigured its first 777-300ER. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) last week updated its guidelines for the transport of cargo in passenger compartments.
