GIG Aviation to launch with ATR 72-500F pair

Nigeria-based logistics company GIG Group has created a new subsidiary airline called GIG Aviation that will launch operations with two converted ATR 72-500Fs. GIG Aviation told Cargo Facts that the two ATR 72-500s are the 2004-vintage unit 713 and the 2005-vintage unit 716. Both aircraft were previously in passenger operation with Spanish airline Binter Canarias and currently are stored in Las Palmas (LPA) while they await conversion according to the Aeroconseil STC [ FATs 007553-7556]. (Photo/Binter Canarias)[/caption] GIG Group is purchasing the two ATR 72-500s from ATR’s asset management division and intends to serve Nigeria’s rapidly growing e-commerce market, according to a release. ATR says there are currently around 140 converted ATR freighters in operation, representing about one-third of the regional freighter fleet. The manufacturer expects a need for 460 freighters in this size category over the next twenty years. Cargo Facts Consulting, presenting its latest Freighter Fleet Forecast for 2022-2041 at Cargo Facts EMEA 2022, predicts that the feeder freighter fleet will increase from around 261 at the end of the first quarter to around 418 by the end of 2041, with around 157 of those being used for growth. Cargo Facts recently reported on Chorus Aviation’s acquisition of U.K.-based Falko, which has just completed its first ATR 72-500F conversion with the addition of the 2009-vintage unit 855 (ex-Air Austral). Meanwhile, Canada-based Calm Air also took redelivery of its first ATR 72-500F with the arrival of the 2004-vintage unit 709 (ex-TICV) in Winnipeg (YWG) on May 2. The two ATR 72-500Fs (726 and 752) that CanaryFly converted but will no longer operate remain parked at Toulouse-Francazal.
