GlobalX to grow A321P2F fleet

Miami-based Global Crossing Airlines will expand its freighter fleet by leasing up to five A321-200P2Fs under a letter of intent with Singapore-based ST Engineering. As it stands, the new airline’s fleet will include up to fifteen A321-200P2Fs in the next two to three years. ST will acquire, convert and maintain the A321s on its own or through joint venture companies, but lease the aircraft to Global Crossing under its own Aviation Asset Management arm rather than the new freighter leasing joint venture ST recently announced with Temasek . The first aircraft will begin conversion with Elbe Fluzgzeugwerke (EFW) in April 2022 at an ST facility in the U.S. ST and EFW, a joint venture with Airbus, intend to begin A321P2F conversions in the U.S. later this year. ST currently has facilities in Mobile (BFM), Pensacola (PNS) and San Antonio (SAT). (Photo/Global Crossing Airlines)[/caption] Global Crossing announced in October 2020 that it will lease ten A321Fs from Vallair , with at least five of those to be converted in the U.S. The airline had previously said the first aircraft would be the 1998-vintage unit 827 (ex-Windrose Airlines), but its status is unclear. In a social media post earlier in May, the airline said it is “negotiating final terms for seven A321 freighters for deliveries starting later this year and into 2023.” It is unclear whether these aircraft are in addition to the five from ST and the ten from Vallair. Cargo Facts believes Global Crossing is also acquiring four 1999- and 2000-vintage A321-200s from Finnair. These four aircraft (941, 961, 1185, 1241), all with CFM56-5B engines, are currently parked in Prague (PRG). Global Crossing previously told Cargo Facts in December 2020 that it was in the process of technical inspections and that it will sell the A321s to Vallair and lease them back in freighter configuration. Also in December, during an end-of-year update, Global Crossing said it had signed an LOI to operate a dedicated A321F on behalf of a major South American logistics company, and another LOI to operate a dedicated A321F on behalf of a major South American airline. Global Crossing also said it was in discussions with DHL Express, Amazon and other logistics companies. The company, which has said it hopes to become a narrowbody version of Air Transport Services Group or Atlas Air, could not be reached for clarification or comment. Earlier this year, Global Crossing received its first A320-200 (2695) and A321-200 (2480) that it will use on passenger services later in 2021, after certification with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation.
