Industry stakeholders provide humanitarian relief for Ukraine

Airfreight industry stakeholders have come together to show their support for Ukraine and its people following Russia’s invasion last week. In the past week, more than 500,000 refugees have fled Ukraine for neighboring countries, with the number expected to reach 1 million over the next few days, according to Michelle Nunn, president and CEO at relief organization CARE USA. The recent reduction of capacity by Russian carriers paired with restricted airspaces only adds challenges to the situation . Together, the dedicated support from the industry will help provide Ukrainians with food, medical relief, shelter and other critical items. Photo courtesy of Correos.[/caption] The debut cargo flight for Correos Cargo, Spain’s national postal service’s own-controlled passenger freighter , will be used to transport more than 40 tonnes of humanitarian-related cargo to Ukrainian refugees in Poland, according to a March 1 release. All aid will be sent to non-governmental organization World Central Kitchen to prepare meals for individuals impacted by the war. The aid, which consists of large-format industrial kitchen food preparation equipment, isothermal equipment for keeping food hot, and logistics material for setting up field kitchens and kitchenware, will be sent to Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport (RZE) in southeastern Poland, which is roughly 90 kilometers from Ukraine’s border. Cargolux Luxembourg-based cargo carrier Cargolux will donate 3.5 million Euros (USD$3.8 million) to help support humanitarian efforts to Ukrainians who have fled the country for safety, according to today’s statement. UNICEF and the United Nations High Commissioner will each receive roughly $1.1 million for Refugees (UNHCR). Around $546,000 will be given to Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), a French-based non-governmental humanitarian medical organization, while the remaining $1.1 million will distributed to local organizations and communes in Luxembourg. Air Charter Service Charter company Air Charter Service (ACS) operated its first charter flight filled with relief cargo to aid Ukraine’s refugees Tuesday morning using a 737 freighter, according to a March 2 release. The flight, which flew from the U.K. to Rzeszow, Poland, was primarily filled with medicine and tents sent from airports in the U.K., Switzerland and the Middle East. ACS cargo personnel will be arriving in Poland to help coordinate additional flights into Warsaw, Rzeszow and Chisinau, as well as flights into countries that border Ukraine. ACS has at least six more flights planned in partnership with various organizations to help with the crisis. [caption id="attachment_98200" align="alignright" width="393"] Photo courtesy of SEKO Logistics[/caption] SEKO Logistics U.S.-based freight forwarder SEKO Logistics is currently collaborating with its European team and Ukraine-based agent to help get humanitarian relief to Ukraine’s borders and into the country, according to a recent LinkedIn post . The forwarder notified that all organizations or non-profits looking to ship relief items for free should contact the company. Boeing Boeing has donated a $2 million emergency assistance package to relief organizations that are working to bring food, water, clothing, medicine and shelter to Ukrainians displaced by the war, according to a March 3 release. This includes Ukrainians seeking refuge in nearby countries. The Boeing Charitable Trust has allocated $1 million to CARE to help provide food, water and hygiene kit distribution, as well as monetary assistance and psychosocial support for those impacted by the crisis. This relief organization has a focus on women, children and elderly individuals. Half of the amount will be distributed to the American Red Cross. The remaining $500,000 is being distributed evenly between Americares, which distributes medicine and medical supplies, and other organizations that are working to provide aid and relief to displaced Ukrainians and those in neighboring countries. All employee contributions will be matched by Boeing. Scan Global Logistics Scan Global Logistics donated DKF 100,000 (USD$14,692) in response to the current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, according to today’s release. The donation has been made to relief organizations UNHCR and SOS Bornebyerne and will be used for a variety of efforts. This includes emergency food, clean water, medicine, sanitation, clothes and warm blankets, as well as shelter assistance to help rebuild damaged homes, trauma treatment and more.
