MSC appoints Matikka to head air cargo operations

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s biggest ocean shipping group, has named Anders Matikka as head of cargo operations, compliance and governance at MSC Air Cargo. Matikka previously served as manager, cargo global operations services at Emirates SkyCargo and chief administrative officer at CargoLogicManagement, a U.K.-based unit of Russian group Volga-Dnepr. MSC has also named Jannie Davel senior vice president of air cargo. He previously served as managing director of commercial at Delta Cargo; vice president of cargo commercial operations, Americas at Emirates SkyCargo; and senior vice president of airfreight at DHL Global Forwarding. Photo/MSC[/caption] The shipping company announced the creation of MSC Air Cargo in September, following in the footsteps of rivals CMA CGM and Maersk. The Geneva-based group entered into a long-term aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) agreement with Atlas Air for four new 777-200Fs. MSC Air Cargo is scheduled to begin operations in early 2023. The first freighter is expected later this year and the other three in early 2023. The company has not disclosed where its cargo operations will be based or which routes it will operate. Earlier this year, Lufthansa Group teamed up with MSC in an ultimately failed bid to acquire a controlling stake in Italy’s ITA Airways. However, Lufthansa Cargo has ruled out possible co-operation with MSC Air Cargo. “There are no strategic plans from a Lufthansa Cargo perspective with regard to MSC Air Cargo,” a spokesperson for the carrier told Air Cargo World.
