FedEx retires 12 more freighters

FedEx retired ten widebody and two narrowbody freighters in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, the company announced in its earnings release today. The aircraft included three MD-11Fs, seven A300-600Fs and two 757-200Fs, along with eight related engines, FedEx said. (Photo/Cargo Facts)[/caption] The retirements, in line with FedEx’s fleet reduction and modernization plan, resulted in a non-cash impairment charge of $21 million, the integrator said. The FedEx fleet stood at 698 aircraft as of May 31, compared to 710 as of the end of the previous quarter on Feb. 28, according to the fleet table in the company’s latest statistical book, also released today. From March 1 through May 31, the end of its fourth quarter, FedEx took delivery of: One 777F (66267) in March and another (66266) in May; One 767-300F (67541) in April and another (67542) in May; and One ATR 72-600F (1765) in April that it placed with Swiftair for CMI operation. It also took delivery of another 767-300F (67543) and a Cessna 408 SkyCourier (408-0042) in June. FedEx said in its Q3 results that it would extend the retirement of its MD-11Fs to fiscal 2032 from fiscal 2028, while agreeing to purchase two used 777Fs and exercising options to buy eight new 777Fs. The overall fleet is set to exceed 700 again in the next twelve months, during which FedEx expects to take delivery of six more 767-300Fs, eighteen more SkyCouriers and three more ATR 72-600Fs, according to the fleet table. Remembering Fred Smith FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith died June 21, three days before the earnings call. Smith, 80, stepped down as the company’s chief executive in March 2022 and became executive chairman. Smith was succeeded as CEO by Raj Subramaniam, who said on today’s earnings call that he would miss Smith’s “impeccable character and wit.” “Fred was more than a business leader,” Subramaniam said. “He was a visionary who revolutionized the delivery industry. He was a man who led with integrity and inspired others. His belief in people, his relentless pursuit of excellence and his commitment to connect people and possibilities built one of the world’s most successful companies over the last five decades and his legacy will be felt for decades to come.” Subramaniam said he was grateful for the opportunity to learn from Smith for more than three decades. “He taught me that leadership is about service and not titles,” he said. “He challenged me to think bigger, act bolder and always, always put our people and our customers at the center of everything we do.” Even in loss, Subramaniam said, he continues to learn from Smith. This past weekend, he discovered that his mentor had the words “waste not a moment” engraved on his watch. “Fred was a man grounded by a mission, and he would tell us to stay focused on the business and keep marching forward,” Subramaniam said. “And so we will do just that.” The company’s board decided June 23 to reduce its size to twelve from thirteen and to elect R. Brad Martin to succeed Smith as chair effective immediately, according to a June 23 SEC filing. Martin, who joined the board in September 2011, previously served as vice chair. He will continue to serve as chair of the board’s Audit and Finance Committee. “As we move forward, we’ll honor [Smith’s] legacy by continuing to build the company he loves with the same passion and purpose he inspired in us all,” Subramaniam said.
