Air Inuit to develop 737-800 Combi

Canada-based Air Inuit plans to develop the first combi conversion supplemental type certificate for at least three 737-800s it is acquiring. The conversions are expected to occur at KF Aerospace’s Kelowna (YLW) facility in British Columbia with redeliveries anticipated to start after certification in twenty-four months, Air Inuit told Cargo Facts. The airline previously worked with Collins Aerospace to develop a Dash 8-300 large-cargo-door (LCD) STC . Once complete, the additions will replace at least some of the four 737-200s with cargo doors in Air Inuit’s fleet and join two Dash 8-300 LCD freighters and a 737-300QC that carry freight to isolated communities in Canada’s Arctic north. While the identity of the 737-800s that will be converted is unclear, Air Inuit said it selected the type for conversion so that it could be equipped with Boeing’s short-field-performance option to make the type “the most adapted for the realities of serving Nunavik” in Combi configuration. First delivered in 2006 to Brazil-based GOL, Boeing’s enhanced short-runway package increases payload capability for landing up to 8,000 pounds on the 737-800, according to the manufacturer. KF Aerospace operates four facilities across Canada and purchased its first 737-800 in 2021 to convert to the Aeronautical Engineers Inc. STC at the YLW facility. That aircraft entered service for fellow Canadian 737 Classic Combi operator Chrono Aviation in February 2022 . KF Aerospace additionally has recently begun work on its first ATR 72-500 LCD conversion . While Air Inuit and Chrono Aviation move to expand their cargo service with the 737NG, another airline that specializes in serving Canada’s isolated communities, Canadian North, has moved to convert one of its 737-400s from Combi to full-freighter configuration .
