Mammoth flies 777-200LRMF prototype destined for Qatar

Mammoth Freighters today carried out the first post-conversion flight of its 777-200LRMF prototype, an aircraft that will join launch operator Qatar Airways as part of a new tripartite deal among Mammoth, Jetran and Qatar. Qatar Airways will take five 777-200LRMFs to add to its fleet of twenty-eight production 777Fs, Mammoth told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/Mammoth Freighters)[/caption] This is the first time the 2009-vintage unit 29742 (ex-Delta Air Lines) has flown since arriving at the Aspire MRO facility in Fort Worth, Texas (AFW), in February 2022. The 777 was previously going to join Cargojet along with three other ex-Delta units (32222, 40559 and 40560), but Cargojet said in early 2024 that it would no longer enter the large-widebody segment . Making progress Mammoth finished installing the large cargo door on unit 29742 in July 2024, and installed the Collins Aerospace cargo-loading system shortly afterward. It hopes to begin test flights in June and to obtain certification in July or August , Chief Executive Bill Tarpley said at Cargo Facts Asia 2025 in March. Units 40560 and 40559 have been at AFW since October 2022 and December 2023, respectively. In addition to the Aspire facility, Mammoth in 2024 began using a new conversion site at the STS Aviation Services facility in Manchester, England (MAN), with unit 32222 arriving in June that year. Feedstock 777-200LRs Mammoth’s principal backer, private investment firm Fortress Investment Group, acquired six other 777-200LRs (29739, 29740, 29741, 30440, 39091 and 39253) from Delta in 2021 as initial feedstock for the conversion program and later sold them to Jetran. While unit 29740 has been at AFW since December 2022, the other five are on short-term leases to Air India. Additionally, Jetran has acquired three sister 777-200LRs (36016, 36017 and 36018) that were previously in service with Qatar Airways. Unit 36016 recently completed noise testing with the FAA and returned to AFW in March and unit 36017 landed at MAN in October 2024, while unit 36018 has gone back to Qatar on short-term lease. Apart from Qatar, Jetran’s 777-200LRMF conversions will join DHL, which said in 2023 that it would source nine 777-200LRMFs from Jetran . Qatar Airways is the largest 777F operator other than FedEx and has twenty-eight units after removing its two 747-8Fs in early 2024. Qatar announced the launch order for Boeing’s 777-8F program in January 2022 and has thirty-four on firm order. However, the new freighter type will not enter service until at least 2028 . 777 conversions Mammoth, which announced its 777-200LRMF and -300ERMF conversion programs in 2021, completed the door installation on the 2007-vintage prototype 777-300ERMF (35299, ex-Nordwind Airlines) at AFW in February. In addition to units 29742 and 35299, units 32222, 40559 and 40560 also have their cargo doors fitted, Mammoth told Cargo Facts . As Mammoth kicks off flight testing for its 777-200LRMF, IAI said in March that it had completed test flights with the FAA for its 777-300ERSF conversion, although it is still awaiting certification.
