IATA, UNCTAD extend partnership to boost global e-commerce

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have extended their partnership to boost e-commerce in developing countries through improved data exchange. IATA and UNCTAD’s partnership aims to enable automated customs management system AsycudaWorld to manage e-commerce shipments through a risk assessment addition for mail shipments. The deal also provides access to IATA’s enhanced partner identification and connectivity (EPIC) platform, as well as Air Cargo Tariff and Rules (TACT) resources, Christian Piaget, head of cargo border management at IATA, told Air Cargo World . Specifically, the use of the EPIC platform will allow AsycudaWorld customers to spread necessary information to air cargo supply chains and gain access to its relevant contacts and capabilities, Piaget said. Meanwhile, IATA’s TACT resources will provide customers access to flight schedules, rates, air cargo rules and more. “The implementation of the latest module of AsycudaWorld enables customs authorities to receive advance data through IATA standard messages,” Piaget said. “On this basis, customs can easily process the data provided by air carriers and undertake risk assessment before the air cargo arrival. This accelerates the release of air cargo upon arrival and in the future, airmail will also be processed in the same manner.” Currently, 100 countries deploy the latest version of AsycudaWorld, including Albania, Angola, Jamaica, Namibia, Seychelles and Zambia, Piaget said. Countries in the pipeline to implement the system include Bangladesh, Rwanda, Uganda and the CARICOM, or Caribbean Community, countries. While IATA and UNCTAD started their partnership in 2013, IATA’s Cargo-XML messaging standards were initially integrated into UNCTAD’s AsycudaWorld in 2017 , allowing countries using the system to process air cargo shipments more efficiently through a standard air cargo messaging system.
