Another Atlas Air 747-400BDSF has emerged from storage.
The aircraft (27062, ex-EVA Air) was one of four freighter-converted 747Fs Atlas had parked and was the last inactive Atlas 747-400F remaining in storage [FAT 005686].
On Oct. 21, the 747-400BDSF left Pinal Air Park (MZJ) and was flown to Taipei (TPE) via Los Angeles (LAX).
The flight occurred the day after Atlas Air and three other cargo carriers were asked by the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis to return funds received from the U.S. Treasury Department under a relief package aimed at preserving aviation jobs.
Soft demand sent the 747-400BDSF into storage in December of last year as part of a plan to park four freighter-converted 747-400Fs. The sluggish demand environment that had made the freighters redundant in Atlas’ fleet was quickly offset by the COVID-19 crisis, which since early spring has dramatically reduced long-haul passenger flight schedules and has consequentially tightened belly hold capacity. The first three freighter-converted 747-400Fs were reactivated by April.
It is unclear if unit 27062 will undergo maintenance at a Taipei-area MRO, such as the EGAT facility, or if the trans-Pacific flight was a revenue-earning one. Atlas Air declined to comment on its plans for the aircraft.
Atlas acquired the 747-400BDSF that left MZJ this week from GECAS in 2017 [FATs 004118–4119]. The 1992-build aircraft operated in passenger configuration by EVA Air until it was converted to BDSF freighter configuration in 2008. EVA continued to operate it until retuning it off lease to GECAS in July 2017.
