Sky Cana launches cargo operation with ATR 72 freighter

Dominican Republic-based Sky Cana, a new wholly owned subsidiary of parcel company LogicPaq, has added an ATR 72-200F and plans to commence cargo service to the United States and other destinations in the Caribbean and Central America, the carrier confirmed to Cargo Facts . Sky Cana is ACMI-leasing the aircraft (483) from fellow flag carrier Air Century and will look to larger freighters as it aims to provide dedicated capacity for LogicPaq and other cargo customers. The airline told Cargo Facts that it began negotiations months ago and is already preparing for ACMI operations with a 737-300F (26070) owned by South Africa-based Star Air Cargo, but did not clarify when it expects the arrangement to begin. (Photo/Sky Cana)[/caption] Sky Cana’s courier parent LogicPaq facilitates express deliveries across the Dominican Republic and other Latin American destinations, and launched Sky Cana last year, according to a regulatory filing with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). In April, Sky Cana applied for an exemption with the DOT to “engage in charter foreign air transportation of property and mail with small aircraft from a point or points in the Dominican Republic, to a point or points in the United States using small aircraft.” The DOT granted an exemption on July 8, allowing for cargo flights between the Dominican Republic and the United States, as well as third countries, “provided that such traffic is carried via the Dominican Republic and makes a stopover in the homeland for at least two consecutive nights,” according to a release. Sky Cana also owns a single Cessna TR-182 that it utilizes for cargo transportation, according to the filing. The carrier recently began passenger operations with a second wet-leased A321-200. As Sky Cana grows its freighter fleet, it expects cargo to contribute to 25-30% of its overall revenue, the carrier said.
