The Power 25: 3 forwarders to watch in 2020

EFL [No. 26] For the last several years, Sri Lanka-based EFL has reported volumes that narrowly miss landing the company on the coveted Power 25 List, according to Amy St. Peter, market research manager of Armstrong & Associates. With 188,263 tonnes of airfreight transported in 2019, EFL missed the No. 25 spot by just over 20,000 tonnes. Tracing its roots back to fast-fashion customers and with supply chains extending to South Asia, EFL has doubled down on international expansion. In contrast to many of the other forwarders Air Cargo World interviewed, EFL is leaning toward organic growth over acquisitions. “We will make strategic acquisitions where necessary, but for the most part, we are not looking to grow by acquisition,” said Evan Rosen, president and CCO of the Americas Region of EFL. Instead, the company is investing in people. “It’s mostly going to be acquisition of talent rather than acquisition of companies,” Rosen added. In 2017, the company began assembling the team in the United States, and has since added staff and offices in Latin America and Europe. EFL is not too overly concerned pandemic-related disruptions will derail its growth targets. “We feel like we are going to come out of this in a better position,” Rosen said. Having handled new clients outside its traditional client base, Rosen expects opportunities to convert some of the new business into long-term clients. C.H. Robinson [No. 25] Although C.H. Robinson continues to derive the bulk of its revenues from various forms of surface transportation in North America, as tonnage suggests, the company has found compatibility between its overland business and airfreight consolidations. “We have a long history in the North American truckload space,” said Matt Castle, vice president of Global Forwarding for C.H. Robinson. “It’s just a matter of continuing to match domestic requests and make them available through global expansion.” A string of international acquisitions since 2017 boosted U.S-based C.H. Robinson’s international forwarding volumes and earned the company a place on the Power 25 list last year for the first time. In 2019, the company handled 210,000 tonnes of airfreight, up significantly from 115,000 tonnes in 2017. C.H. Robinson acquired Australia-based APC Logistics in 2016, Canada-based Milgram in 2017 and Spain-based Space Cargo in 2019. Dimerco Express [No. 24] Since 2013, Taiwan-based Dimerco Express has straddled the lower echelon of the Power 25 list. While the group slipped off the list in 2018, it resurfaced in 2019, landing a No.24. Acquisition and strategic cooperation are two components of Dimerco’s network expansion and business continuity plan that could further propel the transport manager’s ranking in the future. Most recently, Dimerco acquired a 25% stake in Germany-based ITG Air & Sea GmbH, the German affiliate of Sweden-based Elanders.
