Analyzing current yields: Unveiling financial strategies in the express cargo industry

In an era characterized by rapid globalization and e-commerce dominance, the express cargo industry has become critical to the global economy. Fueled by increasing demand for efficient, reliable cross-border logistics, this sector has redefined goods transportation and serves as a key determinant of economic productivity. As supply chains evolve and customer expectations soar, intense focus has been directed toward financial performance, particularly on key metrics like yields.

Yields and financial performance

Yields are the revenue generated per unit of product or service rendered, a metric directly affecting a company's bottom line. Also, yields are crucial indicators of a company’s pricing strategy and its alignment with market demand and competition. Striking the right balance between competitive pricing and maintaining healthy profit margins is essential for long-term success. So higher yields are closely linked to the value proposition a company has with its customers.

In its most recent fiscal year ending in May, FedEx, the second largest express cargo company by revenue, reported a composite yield of $23.85. DHL Express, the third largest express player by revenue, posted a composite yield of $48.42. These figures represent 31% and 19% increases, respectively, from pre-pandemic levels.

Both companies’ financial performances are tied to macroeconomic variables affecting not just revenue but also operational costs. One significant metric is EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) margins, which serves as a gauge of operational cost efficiency across the fiscal year. As evident in Figure 2, DHL's EBIT margin of 13.8% substantially outpaces FedEx's 2.4%. This divergence is even more notable given that DHL operates a fleet of more than 300 aircraft compared to FedEx's 700-aircraft fleet.

DHL’s robust margins provide it with financial resilience in turbulent economic conditions. This enables it not only to sustain dividend payments, but also to continue implementing its investment strategies for growth. Moreover, DHL fortifies its already robust balance sheet, boasting nearly €3.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Figure 2: EBIT margins for FedEx and DHL, 2019-2022

Financial success moving forward

With the express cargo industry vulnerable to macroeconomic shifts — largely attributable to high asset expenditures and extensive cost structures — increasing yields and EBIT margins are essential for optimizing financial performance.

To boost yields, companies must focus on enhancing their value proposition in the eyes of consumers, thereby justifying higher charges for their services. This can be achieved by improving metrics such as on-time, damage-free deliveries, streamlining package tracking systems, and increasing the efficacy of customer service departments in resolving issues. Moreover, integration of AI technologies can provide robust pricing strategies and more accurate demand forecasting, leading to increased revenue per package.

EBIT margins can be improved through a variety of strategies. For instance, optimizing aircraft routes and sorting locations ensures that flights operate at peak capacity, maximizing yield while mitigating fixed costs such as labor, fuel and landing fees.

Digitalization also presents a significant opportunity for cost reduction, a strategy that DHL has effectively employed. In 2022, labor costs amounted to €26 billion for DHL, second only to fuel expenses. Digitalizing roles where feasible can drastically improve operating margins.

Finally, strategic expansion can also contribute to enhanced financial performance. Despite its smaller operational scale compared to FedEx and UPS, DHL has maintained nearly equivalent revenues by making judicious acquisitions of aircraft and companies. Unlike competitors who might seize acquisition opportunities solely based on price, DHL focuses on operational coherence, ensuring that each acquisition aligns well with its existing business model.

Navigating the future

In a climate of economic flux and an evolving cargo landscape, the financial viability of express cargo companies hinges on their ability to adapt intelligently. A nuanced understanding of current yield metrics is fundamental to formulating effective strategies, which are vital for financial resilience and consistent growth.

With uncertainties like rising living costs, an accelerating shift toward e-commerce and increased nearshoring by manufacturers, the traditional revenue streams for express cargo firms are undergoing transformation. Companies that diligently monitor both yield performance and operational efficiencies will be best positioned to respond swiftly to these shifts, thereby maximizing profitability.
