Consultant’s Insight: DHL eCommerce hits 100K access points in Europe

DHL eCommerce recently inaugurated its 100,000th access point in Europe. FedEx and UPS are also expanding their access points in Europe as a means to offer alternative pickup and drop-off locations for customers, as well as a way to reduce delivery costs. [caption id="attachment_76185" align="alignright" width="298"] Cathy Roberson, Cargo Facts Consulting senior consultant and Air Cargo Next columnist[/caption] Access points are locations such as parcel shops or locker locations where customers can send or collect parcels. DHL eCommerce’s access point network is the densest, spanning 28 countries across Europe, and more than 25% of its parcels are delivered to access points in European markets, according to the company. In comparison, UPS has approximately 35,000 access points across Europe and FedEx has an unlisted amount. However, FedEx, UPS and DHL are particularly focused on e-commerce parcels with these solutions. Integration lowers costs FedEx and UPS have more integrated approaches with their solutions. In contrast, DHL eCommerce “partially leverages synergy effects with its sister divisions DHL Express and Post + Parcel Germany ,” according to its announcement. Integrative solutions and access points often lower costs for the delivery companies, allowing them to combine parcels that are being delivered and/or collected at one location. In contrast, home deliveries take longer and often involve just a few packages. UPS also offers access point location options within its digital access program (DAP), which generated more than $1.4 billion in revenue in the first six months of this year. UPS is adding its access points as a delivery choice within some retailers’ online shopping carts. Customers increasingly turn to e-commerce The proportion of European e-shoppers grew to 75% in 2022 from 55% in 2012, according to the European Union ’s statistical agency, Eurostat . As such, more logistics providers are entering the European market to take advantage of this growth, including Alibaba ’s logistics subsidiary, Cainiao Logistics , and Amazon ’s recently relaunched third-party delivery service, Amazon Shipping . Twenty-four percent of European respondents want their parcels delivered to access points, the DHL release said, citing an online shopper survey the company conducted. The full survey results are expected to be released this month. Europe’s 24% is the highest when compared to other parts of the world: 11% in Asia-Pacific; 8.5% in Sub-Saharan Africa; 7.5% in North America; 6.5% in the Middle East and North Africa; and 6% in Latin America. The survey also found that 30% of Europeans would switch to collection to make their delivery more sustainable over having longer delivery times or paying more. Parcel collection from access points can reduce emissions from that sector of the industry by 30%, according to DHL eCommerce.
