Digital Pulse: Ceva to use robots at LA transload facility

Third-party logistics provider Ceva Logistics will use robots from Boston Dynamics to support efficiency and security at its recently opened 135,000-square-foot transload facility in Los Angeles. (Photo/Ceva Logistics)[/caption] The facility offers a cross-belt sortation device, enabling the sorting of 10,000 parcels every hour based on preselected variables such as size, color or preferred carrier, according to a release from Ceva last week. The facility caters to automotive, consumer retail and technology companies. Ceva expects to process 26,000 floor-loaded containers during the facility’s first year in operation and to double its capacity within three years, according to the release. Boston Dynamics’ Stretch robots can unload hundreds of boxes per hour and the Spot robot is used for security, patrolling the site, the release said. “Stretch is designed to safely and rapidly unload containers, which can be a difficult task to perform manually based on the height and weight of boxes, as well as the often-high temperatures found inside containers,” Kevin Blankespoor , senior vice president and general manager of warehouse robotics at Boston Dynamics, said in the release. “Stretch can reach boxes up to 50 pounds in weight, its vision system enables it to adapt to different stacking configurations and it does not require any pre-programming. The robots are ready to go to work as soon as they arrive.” The site was also designed to minimize the company’s carbon footprint by incorporating rooftop solar panels and electric trucks powered by renewable energy sources, which will be in service by January. CargoAi launches CargoCoPilot Airfreight technology solutions provider CargoAi introduced CargoCoPilot this week, a feature within its flagship platform, CargoMART, that uses large language models (LLMs), a type of AI. LLM algorithms use deep learning techniques and vast data sets to understand, summarize, predict and generate content; with this technology, CargoCoPilot offers “real-time intelligent assistance, enabling users to enhance their efficiency, productivity and skills,” a release from CargoAi stated. With CargoCoPilot, forwarder users will receive: Outlook integration, a plug-in that lets users read and search airline rates from their emails; Customized analytics, which offer access to deeper insights and data analytics within and around the CargoMART platform; and Customized analytics insights sent every two weeks to support better procurement decisions. CargoCoPilot has been available to forwarders and Airline CargoMART Pro users since early October. It is also available via API on CargoCONNECT, the release stated. Norse Atlantic joins WebCargo platform Norse Atlantic Airways began offering digital booking and payment ability on booking platform WebCargo by Freightos last month. Norse Atlantic has opened real-time booking for WebCargo’s thousands of forwarders on its flights to and from Europe to seven destinations in the U.S. for technology, perishables and other shipments, according to a release from Freightos. Later this year, Norse plans to add its capacity from London to Barbados and Jamaica, and from Oslo to Thailand, to the platform, expanding WebCargo’s footprint in Asia and the Caribbean, the release stated. “Cargo will play an important role in the future of Norse,” Jennifer Bendelow , head of cargo at Norse Atlantic Airways, said in the release. “Our Viking spirit of ingenuity, coupled with WebCargo’s platform, will extend our reach to key freight markets.”
