European aviation industry is ransomware target

Seventy-three ransomware incidents affecting European aviation were reported last year. That compares with 97 such attacks in the aviation industry in 2021, according to a report published by the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol). M ost incidents impacted original equipment manufacturers, the report stated. The systems must remain resilient to keep risk at an acceptable level, according to Eurocontrol. Eurocontrol and its Computer Emergency Response Team, which have worked to identify industry cyberattacks s ince 2021, identified close to 2.5 ransomware attacks per week on aviation-related organizations . “ Ransomware is a worrying category of cyberattacks; cybercriminals have changed their strategy to focus on companies able to pay large sums … the ransom is around 5% of the annual revenue,” the report stated. The war in Ukraine has caused a dip in activity in some ransomware groups, which often rely on Russian resources, according to the report. However, despite this decline, Eurocontrol said it does expect to see an increase in ransomware incidents in 2023. Cybersecurity under the microscope in US Meanwhile in the United States, Seattle-based logistics company Expeditors International incurred around $40 million in incremental demurrage charges due to the challenges surrounding the movement of shipments through ports following a February 2022 cyberattack . The company is facing a $2.1 million lawsuit brought from customer iRobot Corporation for an alleged lack of deliveries of the electronics company’s goods following the cyberattack. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is increasing its focus on cybersecurity threats following the mid-2021 implementation of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards calling for security screening of cargo transported on cargo-only flights, in addition to the pre-existing standard for screening of cargo on passenger flights.
