FreightSnap halves processing time on dimensioner

FreightSnap has released an enhanced version of its static dimensioner, which uses 3D infrared cameras to measure cargo dimensions. FreightSnap has recently halved processing time for the dimensioner to one second, Bryan Eichenberg, FreightSnap’s co-founder and chief technology officer, told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/FreightSnap)[/caption] The enhanced version, released this year, also operates better in varying lighting situations and takes extra photos of the cargo, he said. An in-house AI model then analyzes the photos to identify any packaging issues, such as if the cargo is leaning or overhanging the pallet. “In that case, the customer would provide us some examples of what they would consider to be not correct, and maybe that is they want a corner stripping on all the pallets they ship out or they need four bands over the top," Eichenberg said. “And at that point, we would train the model to identify those characteristics and then raise a flag if something is missing.” No moving parts When Lenexa, Kansas-based FreightSnap was founded in 2012, cargo was being measured by hand or by LiDAR-based technology, which “was big and expensive and had to be moved across the freight [in a] singular line scan,” Eichenberg said. LiDAR, or light detection and ranging, uses lasers to measure dimensions. FreightSnap’s technology uses four cameras to create a 3D image that calculates height, length and width data. “The big benefits are it has no moving parts,” Eichenberg said. “You don't have to move the sensor around to actually capture that full picture.” FreightSnap’s FS 5000 dimensioner can be used on cubic and irregularly shaped pallets sized 10 feet wide and long and 8 feet high. Another model can be placed over a table to measure parcels, he said. FreightSnap clients include many trucking companies and the following carriers: Amerijet ; Calm Air ; Horizon Air; and Polar Air Cargo . Ease of use FreightSnap’s technology was designed to be easy and quick to use, Eichenberg said. Handlers only need to place the cargo underneath the cameras and start the dimensioner. Eichenberg suggests mounting the cameras over a warehouse’s scale, as that way the cargo can be measured while being weighed, preventing unnecessary movement. “It should not add any additional operational friction to your process,” he said. “The only additional step is to start the dimensioner, and that is either typically done through a barcode scan on a label that's on the freight and/or through a software application.” FreightSnap’s technology is not just easier on employees, it is also easier on a company’s IT system, Eichenberg said. After cargo is measured, that information is uploaded to FreightSnap’s cloud-based storage, which clients can access via a front-end website and API.
