Geodis extends integrated logistics with Trans-o-flex buy

French logistics giant Geodis ’ recent acquisition of Germany-based express provider Trans-o-flex strengthens its position in a key market segment in which air cargo plays a significant role. Trans-o-flex operates a temperature-controlled distribution network for time-critical pharmaceutical and health care products, and the purchase, announced in December and completed last week, is “ a game changer, ” Geodis Chief Executive Marie-Christine Lombard said at a news briefing Tuesday in Frankfurt. The takeover will give Trans-o-flex access to international markets and trade lanes through the French firm’s global footprint, Trans-o-flex CEO Wolfgang Albeck said. The acquisition extends Geodis’s pharma and health care network, which encompasses first- to last-mile logistics for temperature-controlled freight flows in major markets. The network continues to build up through development of specialized hubs worldwide, some of which are Good Delivery Practices (GDP)-certified, Lombard said. Geodis owns GDP-certified pharma hubs in the U.S. (four), Europe (six), India (two), China (two), Hong Kong (one) and Singapore (one). It also has GDP-certified and outsourced pharma hubs in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea and Thailand and GDP-compliant and outsourced hubs in Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. End-to-end service enhanced Thomas Kraus, Geodis’ chief executive for Europe, highlighted how the firm’s end-to end integrated logistics in the pharma and health care segments are enhanced with the purchase of Trans-o-flex. “ I magine a company sitting in South Korea producing pharmaceutical goods,” he said. “We have the capability to pick up those goods, to warehouse those goods, to cross-dock those goods, custo ms clear those goods, move them via temperature-controlled facilities, either on air and ocean [transport] into the gateway in Europe and customs clear those goods again. “T hen , by overland transportation, feed them into Germany and infuse them into the Trans-o- flex network — temperature -controlled or time-definite, high-premium express delivery services. Kraus added: “Following the acqui sition of Trans-o- flex we can now offer our pharma/health care customers and the market at large an end-to-end service from the production side in Asia to last-mile distribution in Germany, delivering to over 14,000 pharmacies and 3,400 hospitals a day,” he added. “It’s a distinct capability. ” Trans-o-flex employs almost 2,000 staff working at 77 network and warehouse locations in Germany and Austria, according to a press release. Its profit in 2022 totaled $662 million compared with $592 million a year earlier and $531 million in 2019.
