IATA’s ONE Record used for first time on sea-air shipment

IATA ’s ONE Record, a standard for data sharing that creates a single record view of a shipment, was used for the first time on an intermodal shipment this month. Cathay Cargo , the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), Yusen Logistics and IATA cooperated on a pilot offering ONE Record data protocols for sea-to-air shipments accepted at the airport’s logistics park in Dongguan . This marks the first time that ONE Record data, including security status, has been made available for a sea-to-air shipment, and the first time cargo acceptance has been logged outside the origin airport’s cargo terminal, according to a release from Cathay Cargo. Cathay Director of Cargo Tom Owen said in the release that the pilot test demonstrates ONE Record’s flexibility and furthers digitalization momentum. The pilot saw air-cargo shipments bound for Bangkok, Manila and Tokyo from forwarder Yusen Logistics accepted at the Cathay Cargo Terminal Dongguan and passed through AAHK security there, according to the release. Goals for ONE Record While including multimodal transport has been a goal for ONE Record , full availability and compliance will take time. “The mission for ONE Record has always been to provide end-to-end connectivity, i.e., from shipper to consignee,” Henk Mulder , IATA head of digital cargo, told Air Cargo Next . “Most of our focus has been on the air transport partners to ensure that the standards work well, but end-to-end connectivity implies multimodal transport as well and we have engaged in international groups like, for example, the European Union and the United Nations to address multimodal data sharing. Until ONE Record is online for everyone, airlines are encouraged to use the platform to work with clients on multimodal data sharing, Mulder said. Completion of the pilot also increased awareness of ONE Record in the Chinese mainland, according to Ingrid Lee , head of cargo digital at Cathay Cargo . “Already, we have observed a surge in interest from Chinese mainland players who want to understand the benefits of ONE Record,” Lee told Air Cargo Next . “Our aim is to drive the entire industry toward digital transformation. Cyrus Chan , manager of the air freight forwarding division at Yusen Logistics, said in the release: “ONE Record is gaining traction and will become the global standard, and we are keen to be an early adopter to align with industry best practice and future developments in air-cargo operations.” Overcoming challenges To successfully implement ONE Record, stakeholders need to be involved and on the same page, IATA’s Mulder said. “The challenge with every ONE Record implementation is cooperation with partners,” he said. “Generally, the partners are willing to agree on the specifics of a use case, i.e., what data needs to be shared, what business processes are used and, if necessary, adapted, who provides the technical ONE Record infrastructure, etc. In practice, these are not hard questions to answer once the partners have identified the opportunity and have agreed on their cooperation.” Cooperation is not easy to attain when some partners are unaware of ONE Record. “We encountered challenges in raising awareness and readiness for IATA ONE Record, which was relatively low in the Chinese mainland market,” Cathay’s Lee said. “We engaged with potential forwarder partners, explaining the advantages of data sharing through the ONE Record standard to facilitate timely shipment status exchange.” Ultimately, Cathay Cargo partnered with Yusen Logistics after being able to “demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of ONE Record adoption even for complex shipment modes,” Lee said.
