Amazon Air diversifies fleet and partners in 2021

The opening of Amazon’s primary air hub in Cincinnati (CVG) this week represents a major milestone for the e-tailer and comes in a year in which the company not only continued growing its fleet, but further diversified its aircraft types and carrier partners. Although Amazon’s core growth centers around the 767-300F platform, having put eleven units into service so far this year, the company is branching out and will soon begin regional operations with ATR 72Fs . (Photo/Amazon)[/caption] This year also saw Amazon start own-controlled operations in Canada using its own aircraft. Here is an overview of all the freighter aircraft additions Amazon has made to date in 2021, as of Aug. 12: Eight 767-300BDSFs that it has leased from Cargo Aircraft Management (CAM) and placed with Air Transport International (ATI) for CMI operation; One 767-300BDSF that it owns and has placed with ATI for CMI operation; Two 767-300BDSFs that it owns and has placed with Cargojet for CMI operation; One ATR 72-500F that it has leased from ATR and placed with Silver Airways for CMI operation (but the aircraft has yet to begin flying); and One 737-800SF that it has leased from Aero Capital Solutions and will place with ASL Airlines for CMI operation. At the end of 2020, the Amazon Air operation already included a fleet of more than seventy freighters, spread across six carriers: Air Transport Services Group’s two carriers, ATI and ABX Air, operated thirty-three 767Fs, including two 767-300Fs Amazon had transferred from Atlas Air; Atlas Air operated seventeen 767-300Fs; Southern Air operated eight 737-800Fs; Sun Country Airlines operated twelve 737-800Fs; and ASL Airlines operated two 737-800Fs and a number of 737-400Fs. In 2022, Amazon will continue to convert and place more of the 767-300ERs it purchased. Cargo Facts expects to see the e-tailer also adding more 737-800Fs, particularly for European operations, and potentially more ATRs for domestic U.S. routes.
