A new airport for Dalian

Rapidly growing Dalian, a port city of 7 million in China’s Liaoning province, plans to replace its old airport with a giant US$4.28 billion hub on an artificial island. The city’s current Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport (DLC), which is the country’s 17th busiest – it handled 129,000 tonnes of cargo and 14 million passengers in 2013 – is expected to exceed its capacity in the next few years, according to the Dalian International Airport Co Ltd. The new facility, to be constructed out of landfill material, will have four runways long enough to land A380s, cover nearly 31 square kilometers and provide capacity for up to 25 million passengers per year.
