Air Tanzania to enter freighter ops with 767F

Air Tanzania ordered a single 767-300F in a deal with Boeing announced Tuesday at the Dubai Airshow [FAT 006865]. The order represents the Dar es Salaam-based carrier’s first move into dedicated freighter operations, adding another airline to the small list of African widebody freighter operators. (Photo/Boeing)[/caption] Apart from the freighter, Air Tanzania also ordered a 787-8 and two 737 MAXs. The deal is valued at more than $726 million and the aircraft were previously listed in the backlog as belonging to an unidentified customer, according to Boeing. The production 767-300F is Africa's first and will help the airline capitalize on the region’s growing cargo demand. Currently, Air Tanzania’s fleet consists of two 787-8s, four A220-300s and three Dash 8-Q400s. The majority of the Africa-based freighter fleet is concentrated in the Eastern part of the continent in Ethiopia and Kenya, where Ethiopian Airlines and Astral Aviation are based. Astral added one 767-200F to its fleet earlier this year and is in the process of adding three 757-200Fs. Morocco-based Royal Air Maroc is the region’s other 767F operator, with a single 767-300BCF in its cargo fleet. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook released in September forecasts that, by 2040, Africa’s airlines will require 1,030 new airplanes valued at $160 billion and aftermarket services such as manufacturing and repair worth $235 billion. African carriers are also estimated to need 250 new widebodies, including passenger and cargo models, to support long-haul routes and air freight growth.
