11.11 – Let the e-Commerce Madness Begin [VIDEO]

Today is Friday.

But not just any Friday.

Today is Friday, the 10th of November. 11.10 or 10.11, depending on how your write your dates.

But tomorrow, no matter what convention you adopt for writing the day and the month, it will be 11.11. In fact, by the time you read this, it will already be 11.11 in China.

Once an obscure “Day” named for unmarried people in China (Singles Day), 11 November rapidly became the biggest shopping day in the world. Perhaps even in the entire Galaxy. For which we can thank Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

Last year, online shoppers — still mostly in China, but increasingly elsewhere — spent over US$18 billion in that one 24-hour period. This year?  $20 billion? $25 billion? Who knows? You can follow the craziness live on Alibaba’s 11.11 site.

11.11 may not be a movie, but Alibaba has produced a trailer for it anyway. Welcome to the madness…
