DHL Air Austria receives 20th 757 freighter

DHL Air Austria has received its twentieth 757 freighter as European Air Transport Leipzig prepares to remove the type from its fleet. The 1998-vintage Boeing 757-200PCF (29330) stopped service with European Air Transport (EAT) Leipzig, a wholly owned subsidiary of DHL Express, on Oct. 1. (Courtesy/DHL Air Austria)[/caption] The aircraft is now registered to DHL Air Austria, according to the Austrian aircraft registry. It began flying under its new Austrian registration on Oct. 6, flight tracking data shows. DHL Air Austria expects to receive another 757 freighter from EAT Leipzig in November, experts familiar with the matter told Cargo Facts . The only remaining 757 in EAT Leipzig’s fleet is the 1999-vintage unit 28174, which is still in service. The arrival of unit 28174 will mark the third 757 freighter retirement from EAT Leipzig this year. The carrier told Cargo Facts in March that it could potentially phase out the type by yearend. Both units joining DHL Air Austria will serve DHL Express’s European network, the experts said. Excepting unit 28174, EAT Leipzig’s fleet includes: Twenty-six A300-600Fs; Three A330-200Fs; and Four A330-300P2Fs. EAT Leipzig will continue to perform key maintenance on unit 29330 at its hangar at Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ), a spokesperson for the carrier told Cargo Facts. The 757 is a strong fit for DHL’s intra-European network, offering useful payload and range without the cost of a larger widebody, David Yu, professor of finance at New York University and chairman of the Asia Aviation Valuation Advisors Group, told Cargo Facts. “Consolidating the type at DHL Air Austria also simplifies crews, maintenance and fleet planning for continued growth,” he said. Wouter Dewulf, dean of the Antwerp Management School and professor of air transport management and economics, offered a similar perspective. “DHL Air Austria was established with the 757 as the backbone of its fleet, while EAT Leipzig is increasingly concentrated around the larger Airbus A300 and A330,” he said. “Moving the remaining 757s to the Austrian AOC therefore allows DHL to consolidate aircraft, crews, training and operational expertise around particular fleet types.” DHL Air Austria also expects one 767 freighter to be transferred from DHL Air UK in the second quarter of 2027, the experts familiar with the matter said. It will mostly serve busy lanes in DHL’s intra-European network, they added. DHL set up its Austrian AOC prior to Brexit , beginning operations with a fleet of 757-200Fs in 2021. The integrator designed the Vienna-based airline for intra-Europe flights, shifting DHL Air UK toward intercontinental operations. DHL Air Austria received its first 767 freighter , a 2000-vintage 767-300BDSF (27686, ex-Royal Air Maroc), in 2023. 757 and 767 freighters have considerable cockpit training commonalities, Dewulf said. “Concentrating those Boeing types within one airline can therefore simplify crew planning and training, while EAT can increasingly focus its resources on its Airbus fleet,” he said. After the upcoming additions, DHL Air Austria’s fleet will include twenty-one 757-200 freighters and five 767-300 freighters. “For an express operator [the 757] remains a remarkably useful aircraft: Its combination of payload, range and performance is difficult to replace one-for-one with today's available freighter types,” Dewulf said.
