777-8F EIS pushed to 2029 by 777-9 delay

The entry into service of Boeing’s upcoming 777-8F has most likely slipped into 2029 because of the planemaker’s adjusted timeline for the passenger 777-9. A derivative of the 777X family, the first delivery of the 777-8F will take place approximately two years after the first 777-9 delivery, Boeing told Cargo Facts . (Photo/Cargo Facts)[/caption] The 777-9 is anticipated to start delivering in 2027 instead of 2026, Boeing announced in its third-quarter results on Oct. 29. The company reported a $4.9 billion charge as a result. Boeing reassessed its certification timeline because it is taking longer than expected to complete the certification program for the 777-9, President and Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg told analysts during the earnings call. This is the second time that Boeing has pushed back the entry into service of the 777-8F. In October 2024, the planemaker said it had delayed the first delivery to 2028 from 2027. During the third quarter, Boeing completed critical testing of the 777-9’s brakes, engines, takeoff performance and aerodynamic performance, but still has “a significant portion of the flight test certification program to go,” Ortberg said. In the meantime, Boeing is building the first 777-8F and advancing the engineering efforts required to certify the freighter, it told Cargo Facts . Boeing formally kicked off production of the 777-8F prototype this summer, drilling the first hole in the first wing spar in July at its Composite Spar Shop in Everett, Wash. The backlog for the new large-widebody twinjet freighter consisted of fifty-nine 777-8Fs for six carriers as of Oct. 30: Thirty-four for Qatar Airways ; Ten for Cargolux ; Seven for Lufthansa ; Four for China Airlines ; Two for ANA ; and Two for Silk Way West Airlines . Boeing is also finalizing a deal with Korean Air that includes up to eight 777-8Fs. European planemaker Airbus has also twice pushed back the entry into service of its new A350F. The first delivery of that freighter type is now expected in the second half of 2027 .
