Abelo enters freighter segment with first ATR 72F conversion

Ireland-based Abelo has taken redelivery of its first ATR 72 freighter and becomes the latest lessor to enter the turboprop freighter space. Unit 875 (ex-TruJet), a 2009-vintage ATR 72-500F that completed conversion in late May, arrived in Monchengladbach (MGL) on June 24. It was also the first ATR freighter conversion to take place at the GMR Aero Technic facility in Hyderabad (HYD). (Photo/TruJet)Abel[/caption] Abelo selected the bulk freighter conversion STC from Spain-based Aerodisa and opted to have unit 875 converted at HYD partly because it was already there in storage, the lessor told Cargo Facts , adding that it has not yet secured a lessee for the freighter but is seeing demand for a fresh, bulk-configured ATR 72 conversion. Abelo said it took repossession of the aircraft after its previous operator suspended operations in 2022, and then saw an opportunity to position that asset in the cargo market. Formed in June 2022 after the merger of Elix Aviation and Adare Aviation Capital, Abelo has a portfolio of fifty-eight aircraft, including twenty-five ATR 72s, nine ATR 42s and twenty-four Dash 8s, the lessor confirmed to Cargo Facts . It also has twenty new passenger ATRs on order. Abelo does not have many of those ATRs coming off passenger leases imminently that are around the right age for conversion. However the lessor said it intends to grow its presence in the freighter segment as those aircraft become older, and is open to other STCs and conversion locations; it will likely focus more on bulk conversions for now. In addition to Abelo, other lessors are growing their ATR freighter portfolios, including ACIA Aero Leasing , Nordic Aviation Capital and Jetstream Aviation Capital . Meanwhile, GMR Aero Technic is set to become the first conversion site in India for Boeing’s 737-800BCF program.
