Cathay Cargo Terminal uses AI to monitor safety, security

Cathay Cargo Terminal has integrated AI into its CCTV infrastructure to monitor safety and security at the Hong Kong facility. The AI solution , developed by New York-based Intenseye, uses algorithms in conjunction with advanced computer vision to monitor safety and security hazards in real time, according to a recent release from Cathay. The technology can determine if: Employees are not wearing safety equipment; Vehicles or equipment are moving too close to each other or to workers; Individuals are not following pedestrian walkways or work-at-height protocols; Shipments are unattended at truck docks; Unsanctioned intrusions are occurring; and Other terminal-specific scenarios are happening. (Courtesy/Cathay)[/caption] After a potential hazard is found, the system can send out real-time alerts, Intenseye Chief Executive Sercan Esen told Cargo Facts . The system can conduct safety checks across the terminal’s operations, flagging issues before they become incidents, he said. The system can also create tasks, inspections and audits within the platform to take corrective actions and track progress and performance. Tailored solution The Intenseye solution has built-in privacy protections and “ensures the complete anonymity of individuals” by processing video streams locally, Esen said. The solution also does not store, transfer or share personal data. The platform offers customizable privacy overlays, such as facial blurring and full-body anonymization, Esen said. Cathay Cargo Terminal is the first cargo terminal to adopt Intenseye’s solution, which was tailored to Cathay’s needs. Custom modules were developed to address terminal-specific use cases, such as detecting unattended shipments at truck docks, Esen said. The AI solution helps Cathay Cargo Terminal “see the unseen” at its Hong Kong (HKG) facility, Cathay Cargo Terminal Chief Operating Officer Mark Watts said in the release. Cathay Cargo Terminal has more than 1,400 HD CCTV cameras covering its facility, making it impossible to monitor them all manually in real time, a Cathay spokesperson told Cargo Facts . More uses for AI Cathay Cargo Terminal has also started installing AI on all X-ray machines at the terminal to improve screenings for lithium and plans to introduce AI into its thermal imaging program in 2025, according to the release. AI supports Cathay Cargo Terminal’s Enhanced Lithium Screening Programme by using Cathay’s proprietary image library, publicly available data and machine learning to identify undeclared lithium batteries and lithium batteries exceeding the power levels declared by shippers, a Cathay spokesperson told Cargo Facts . The system’s recognition algorithms automatically detect a growing list of dangerous or prohibited items, according to Cathay. Cathay Cargo Terminal began introducing AI into its X-ray machines earlier this year and expects to complete installation in the first quarter of 2025.
