Amazon continues to dole out CMI contracts for its eleven owned 767-300ERs currently in various stages of conversion with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), and will place a pair of 767-300BDSFs with Cargojet later this year for CMI operations within Canada as part of a new deal [FATs 006104-6105].
The Canadian ACMI and charter operator will become the third company providing CMI services for the Amazon Air 767 freighter fleet in North America, joining the airline affiliates of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and Air Transport Services Group (ATSG).
The initial contract is for four years and has three two-year extension options that could keep the freighters in the Cargojet fleet for up to ten years, the carrier announced in a release on April 1.
Cargojet did not identify aircraft that would be joining its fleet later this year, but Amazon only has three owned 767-300ERs undergoing freighter conversion that are expected to be redelivered this year. Amazon acquired eleven 767-300ERs that exited the fleets of WestJet and Delta Air Lines last year and had previously said it expects the four ex-WestJet frames to join Amazon Air this year, while the ex-Delta aircraft will join the network in 2022.
The first WestJet redelivery was placed with ATSG-affiliate Air Transport International (ATI) in late March and a second unit is expected to end up in the ATI fleet. One aircraft (25576) remains in conversion in Tel Aviv while Amazon’s two other WestJet acquisitions (30595 and 30575) are being converted at the Mexicana facility in Mexico City (MEX). Neither Amazon nor Cargojet responded to a request to confirm the MSNs of the aircraft heading back to Canada.
Amazon’s relationship with Cargojet precedes the CMI deal. The carrier has been operating charters and carrying Amazon goods on its scheduled, capacity-neutral flights. In August 2019, Cargojet issued two tranches of warrants equal to a 14.9% stake in the company that mature as commercial requirements are met.
