Northern Air Cargo opts for 767-300BCFs to fuel expansion

Northern Aviation Services (NAS), th e parent of Northern Air Cargo and Aloha Air Cargo , ordered fo u r 767-300BCF conversions from Boeing [FATs 006190-6193] . As the group doubles down on long-haul services , it i s moving forward with the first medium-widebody conversions of its own. Upon redelivery, the freighters will be placed with Northern Air Cargo, according to a social media post from Boeing. (Photo/Northern Air Cargo)[/caption] Boeing did not disclose the redelivery timeline. At present, NAS has four 767-300BDSF freighters — three with Northern and one with Aloha . The existing 767-300BDSFs a re leased from ATSG-affiliate Cargo Aircraft Management , and the Aloha aircraft is currently operated on a CMI basis by Air Transport International . “NAS has the flexibility to grow or replace existing units as the market develops,” Betsy Seaton, CEO of NAS, told Cargo Facts . “At this time, we are encouraged by market trends in our business but will make a final decision closer to scheduled lease expiration.” In a March investors presentation, ATSG noted that the 767-300F s it leases to customers including NAC a re leased for “up to ten - year te rm s . ” Aloha added its 767 in 2017, while Northern added two in 2018 and a third this year. Seaton told Cargo Facts that the 767s will be “ mid-life planes that can serve NAS for fifteen to twenty years with ample airframe life remaining. ” As for the choice of the Boeing conversion over Israel Aerospace Industries’, Seaton said that the decision was based on the overall economics, proximity of conversion slots, and flexible business terms. While two of Northern’s 767Fs have been operating in the Southern Hemisphere on flights between Miami (MIA) and destinations in Latin America, the Aloha aircraft has been flying between Hawaii and the West Coast. Seaton confirmed that NAC has now obtained ETOPS certification and will be able to operate these flights on its own.
