Northern Air Cargo to stop flying 767s

Northern Air Cargo is moving away from 767 freighter operations so parent Saltchuk Aviation can focus on its cargo business in Alaska and Hawaii. Northern expects to conclude all 767 flying in October as part of an effort to streamline operations and concentrate on the services where Saltchuk Aviation is strongest to ensure long‑term stability and growth across its core businesses, the group told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/Northern Air Cargo)[/caption] The Anchorage, Alaska-based carrier will return its 767-300 freighters to Saltchuk Aviation’s leasing arm, NAS Aircraft Leasing Co., which will determine what to do with them, the group said. Replacing leased 767s with owned units Saltchuk Aviation, which owns Northern Air Cargo, Aloha Air Cargo, StratAir and Ryan Air, has been trimming its 767 operations over the past six months after returning one 1992-vintage 767-300BDSF (25201) to CAM in 2023 and a 1993-vintage unit (25451) in 2024. That left Northern Air Cargo with six 767s. Two of those are -300BDSFs that had been on lease from CAM but Cargo Facts believes Saltchuk Aviation has already returned these to the lessor: The 1998-vintage unit 29431, which has been in Wilmington, Ohio (ILN), since April; and The 1992-vintage unit 25199, which flew to Roswell, N.M. (ROW), on July 17 but ended service in November 2024. The other four 767s are -300BCFs that Saltchuk Aviation bought and converted with Boeing : The 2000-vintage unit 30563 has been in Goodyear, Ariz. (GYR), since July 1; The 2000-vintage unit 30565 has been at GYR since June 1; The 2000-vintage unit 30566 has been in Guangzhou (CAN) since July 4; and The 2001-vintage unit 28141 is the only active aircraft, flying between Honolulu (HNL) and Los Angeles (LAX). Saltchuk had converted two more 767-300BCFs (30564 and 28043); NAS Aircraft Leasing placed them on lease with Georgia-based Geosky in late 2024. Growing with 737s While Saltchuk Aviation winds down its widebody operations, its narrowbody fleet is expanding to strengthen the group’s intra-Alaska and intra-Hawaii businesses. A 1998-vintage 737-400F (28889) that Italy-based Poste Air Cargo returned to Automatic earlier this year is joining Saltchuk Aviation on lease and will go into service this fall, replacing one of Aloha’s 737-300Fs (25606), the group told Cargo Facts . Unit 28889 flew to Opa-locka, Fla. (OPF), today. It had arrived in Dothan, Ala. (DHN), on July 1 from Naples, Italy (NAP), after exiting service with Poste Air Cargo in January. Along with a 1993-vintage 737-400SF (25859) that Saltchuk received from Automatic in February, the group’s narrowbody fleet will grow to: One 737-800SF; Six 737-400Fs; and Four 737-300Fs. Saltchuk is considering both Classics and NGs for future opportunities, and will decide based on what is the best fit for its markets, it said.
