New ATSG CEO Mike Berger takes reins from Hete

Mike Berger today became Air Transport Services Group’s new chief executive, signaling an end to the transition period that started in November 2023 when ATSG removed Rich Corrado and brought Joe Hete on as interim CEO. “Our priority remains to deliver on our 2024 outlook,” Berger told Cargo Facts . “We are steadfast in our focus on execution and delivering value, which is crucial for ATSG to regain the market’s trust that was impacted in 2023.” [caption id="attachment_56868499" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Berger was most recently president of ATSG. This approach ensures enhanced investment value across the board.” Hete was appointed executive chairman and Jeffrey Dominick replaces Berger as president, according to ATSG. ATSG appointed Berger as president on Oct. 1, 2023, after promoting him to chief strategy officer on Dec. 5, 2022. Priorities Additional priorities for ATSG include maintaining and expanding its leadership across all business areas, including solidifying subsidiary CAM’s position as the world’s largest freighter lessor, and its people, Berger told Cargo Facts . “We are passionately committed to fostering an environment where employees can thrive, develop their skills and contribute to our mission of delivering industry-leading service across the globe,” he said. “Our dedicated team has been the driving force behind our growth, continually innovating and uncovering new opportunities to deliver even greater value to the market and our customers. Berger joined ATSG in February 2018 as chief commercial officer, bringing with him experience at major air cargo players including DHL and TNT. Hete was CEO of ATSG from October 2007 to May 2020. ATSG reappointed him to the role in November 2023 to improve its finances through cost reduction, among other things. ATSG said in its first-quarter earnings report in May that it projects an increased EBITDA of $516 million for 2024, up $10 million from its February outlook, and capital expenditure for the year will be $410 million, $380 million less than in 2023. “We remain dedicated to delivering value to our investors by consistently exceeding customer expectations while maintaining disciplined spending,” Berger said. “This approach ensures enhanced investment value across the board.” Change at ATSG Berger takes the helm at a time of change for at least some of ATSG’s subsidiaries. This month, ABX Air will begin taking on at least ten 767-300 freighters as part of a new CMI arrangement with Amazon . The e-tailer is transferring these aircraft from Atlas Air, which said at the end of May that it will exit all CMI operations for Amazon . The first freighter (28098) flew from Cincinnati, Ohio (CVG), to ATSG’s facility in Tampa, Fla. (TPA), on May 30 ahead of joining the ABX fleet. Meanwhile, CAM expects to soon take redelivery of its first A330-300P2F conversion and lease it to ULS Airlines Cargo , and also has A321-200PCFs available for lease.
